Rulesets

Rulesets

Introduction #

One of the key features of the eMessaging module is the increased control offered in the way that validation rules are applied to messages received. The full power of the eMessaging module can only be appreciated if you have a basic understanding of how the rules work, and this section aims to give you this. The system administrator is responsible for the management of the rules, and there are more comprehensive instructions in the System Administration Guide. This section is only an overview.

We start with the basic build blocks - rules. There are over 200 rules in eMessaging, of three main types:

  • Referencing
  • Validation
  • Apply

Each rule has a number of rule settings. Some of these are ‘factory’ settings that you cannot change, some are settings that the system administrator can change, whilst others can be altered by the user. Examples of the user rule settings include:

  • Is on (yes or no)
  • Allow Override (yes or no)
  • Problem type (error, waiting or warning)

Managing Rulesets #

The rules by themselves are not very useful. To be effective they need to be marshalled into groups of rules that perform a set of tasks. These groups of rules are known as Rulesets. There are rulesets at four levels, and each rule can belong to only one level

  • Basic
  • Message type
  • Partner
  • Insured period
  • Claim section

The Basic ruleset contains rules that operate on all messages.

The Message type rulesets contain rules that operate on messages of that type - the TechAccount ruleset applies to TechAccount messages.

The Partner rulesets contain rules that apply to partners - either to partners of a particular type (e.g. brokers or service providers), or to specific partners.

The Insured period rulesets contains rules that apply to business insured periods - these are always based on Type of business, but can also be based on Main Class of business, on a ruleset name, or can be specific for a particular insured period.

When eMessaging is installed, a limited number of default rulesets are created. Your system administrator can use these default Rulesets as templates to create further rulesets for specific need.

The end user can manage the rulesets used on
individual business partners,
specific insured periods and claim sections,
selecting from the sets created by the system administrator, and modifying them to meet the requirements of a particular partner or business. The details of how to select and modify a specific partner ruleset are in eMessaging details on Business partners. The details of how to select and modify a specific insured period ruleset are in eMessaging information on a Business Insured period. The details of how to select and modify a specfic claim section ruleset are in eMessaging information on a Claim.
